On Tuesday 4 July two pupils from Wisbech Grammar School competed at the IAPS National Athletics Championships at The Alexander Stadium in Birmingham.
Lucy Prior qualified from the Regional Championships at Bedford to compete in the U14 Triple Jump. There were 18 girls in the Competition and after the first three jumps Lucy made it through to the last 8 girls to be allowed a further jump. Her best jump was 9.06m and she finished in 7th place.
Lewis Shipley qualified at Bedford for the 100 metres and 800 metres finals. The 100 metres were split into three heats and Lewis won Heat 2 to qualify for the final. In the final, he came a close 2nd with a time of 11.95 seconds.
The 800 metres was split into two races with the times to decide the overall winner. After some intensive physio from our School Physio during the short turn around and words of wisdom from the Strength & Conditioning Coach, Lewis took the starting line. He was in 2nd place after lap one and following some physical racing he was in 4th place with 200 metres to go. Down the home straight, Lewis found another gear and came home in 1st place. He was then placed 1st overall when the times of the two races were put together.
This was a great achievement for Lucy and Lewis and we are all immensely proud of them.
