Our philosophy is that all pupils are entitled to good teaching and coaching at whatever level they play. One of the strengths of sport at Wisbech Grammar School is that the Senior Coaches also work with the younger pupils and the lower ability teams, allowing them to develop to the best of their ability.
The overall aim of at WGS is for boys and girls to take part in and enjoy the many Sports we offer, catering for all abilities and talents, and to encourage them to regard exercise as an essential part of a healthy lifestyle both at school and throughout their lives. Pupils receive a structured curricular sports programme as well as access to a range of co-curricular and extra-curricular activities.
The opportunities we provide reflect our aim to meet pupil’s aspirations and enable them to meet their sporting goals. Talented rugby, hockey, netball, cricketers and athletes, as well as individual sportspeople in other fields can access tailor made coaching programmes, via our Elite athletes programme and combine this with an excellent academic education.
The major sports are rugby, hockey, cricket and athletics for boys; hockey, netball, cricket and athletics for girls. There is a busy programme of fixtures against other schools with as many of our pupils in action on Saturdays.
In addition to the excellent games provision Wisbech Grammar School has a breadth of excellence in coaching to allow pupils to develop in areas outside traditional games. There are a considerable number of alternatives for those who prefer individual sports or wish to develop their personal fitness including archery, badminton, cross-country, cycling, squash, table tennis, tennis, trampolining, and fitness classes (spinning, body pump, and aerobics) and the use of the fitness suite.
In recent years the Schools players have achieved considerable success at County, divisional and Academy level with pupils going on to represent England, Scotland and The Independent Schools Rugby team, “The Lambs”.
Facilities are excellent with a generous provision of rugby pitches; including a newly laid 1st XV pitch; netball courts, cricket wickets (grass and synthetic) and an athletics track with jumping and throwing areas. The magnificent sports hall has five Cricket Net bays and is used for Netball matches and a variety of Indoor sports. Hockey players use the School’s own sand dressed pitch.
Northampton Saints coach, Jon Curry, takes weekly sessions with our Rugby Teams and we also have local Hockey, Netball and Cricket Clubs training here.
