U12 Boys County Hockey Tournament

The Boys played in the new National Schools In2 Hockey U12 Championships at the Leys School, Cambridge. The matches were 15 minutes one way and the results were as follows:

WGS 0-1 St Faith’s

WGS 0-2 King’s Cambridge

WGS 0-4 Kimbolton

All the matches were well contested with the boys working for each other and the team.

As we move forward the boys all agreed we need to work on our tackling, decision making, composure on the ball and movement off the ball. Special mention must go to goalkeeper, Joe Bly who made many great saves during the day and who was singled out for special praise by all the opposition coaches.

Girls-U11A

at home vs Widford Lodge Prep School

Won : 2-0

Today the under 11A team played Widford who were on a sports tour from Essex. This would be an interesting game, as Wisbech hadn’t played together or picked up a hockey stick since Christmas.

Wisbech entered the game with a positive attitude. The girls encouraged each other tremendously well and their performance built as the first half progressed. Soon Wisbech took the lead through Gabriella Aistrup Mancera who finished from a rebound in the centre of the D. It was evident that the girls had recalled the game awareness from earlier in the season as they moved the ball well in key areas of the pitch.

The second half started where the first ended: an even affair; but gradually Widford became more threatening. Some fantastic defensive play by Annabel Gee and Dillany Jeyakumar kept the visitors at bay and with Olexandra Klibanecz in goal meant that Wisbech could maintain a clean sheet. Soon the momentum shifted and Widford struggled to get the ball out from defensive hit outs. Gemmima Mitchell scored the second goal of the game and silenced any chances of a comeback.

The team ended with a real buzz about themselves. They had played very well; and Widford were a pleasure to host. A wonderful day of hockey!

WGS 1st VII vs Dartford Grammar School

WGS were in control of this match from the start and played with confidence. We moved the ball quickly from centre passes into our attacking D and both shooters timed their moves well to receive the ball and shoot accurately. We provided at least 2 options for the ball carrier at all times and Hetty and Hannah worked hard to achieve this. The defence also gave the reset option and we used this effectively. The whole team worked hard to defend across the court and picked up lots of turn over ball, which we converted into our own goals. We were able to try some of the centre passes out that we had been working on in training and our timing was impressive.

The ball speed and level of confidence in this game were excellent and we knew that we had to take this into the match against Bedford on Saturday.

Hannah Lemmon was awarded player of the match in what was a very good team performance. She listened to advice and worked hard around the court, not only moving to get the ball but taking interceptions across the court as well.

MVP(s)
Hannah Lemmon
