6th Formers Enjoy Foodie Fest in London

6th Formers Enjoy Foodie Fest in London

At Wisbech Grammar School, we go beyond the narrow confines of the classroom to bring fresh and exciting opportunities for our pupils to gain first-hand insights into their interests and subjects.   Open Morning 30 September 10 - 12.30pm - Come and find out who YOU could become...

At the Evening Standard’s London Restaurant Awards in 2016, London was hailed as most 'diverse and exciting' food capital in the world. Daniel Noake, Events Director of the Taste of London festival, said the city’s “openness” to foods from different cultures and regions was the driving force behind its culinary success. So, if our 6th Form pupils were hoping to experience culinary diversity, where better to travel than to London.

The group visited a variety of food businesses and immersed themselves in the latest food trends. First stop was Borough Market where a tasting of Stilton in Neals Yard cheese shop began a day of eating. Next, around the market the group ate mussels, paella, prawn pasties, duck wraps and fudge and learnt about truffles, taking in their distinctive aroma!

Lunch took place at the Duck and Waffle, a restaurant on the 40th floor of the Heron Tower. With panoramic views of London, pupils enjoyed octopus, celeriac carbonara, goat meatballs, ox cheek, fried pigs’ ears, roast chicken and mushrooms, duck with waffles and maple mustard sauce. to finish, they enjoyed chocolate fondant, choux with salted caramel, arctic roll and sorbets.

Next stop was Le Gavroche, where Emmanuel Landré the General Manager talked about the history of Le Gavroche and about the hospitality industry at this top level. The pupils were shown around the kitchen, restaurant and the wine cellars and took part in a Q and A session. From here they visited Selfridges Food Hall and tasted a new product made of balls of ice cream wrapped in rice dough. After a walk through China Town, the pupils visited Chipotle to try wraps, rice, beans, BBQ chicken, guacamole and chilli sauce.  After bumping into the actor Michael Gambon outside Chipotle the group returned to Kings Cross, very full after a fabulous foodie day.

Here are some memories of the day...
